The Queensland women’s senior sides team celebrated their second win in two years after powering home in the last round to seize the coveted Australian Senior Sides Championships title (Oct 10-13) at Osborne Park Bowls Club in WA.
A win in the final round against ACT enabled QLD to hijack the top spot on the overall leader-board, one-upping ACT with a combined team shot total of 76-41.
The Maroons’ last hoorah catapulted them ahead of old rivals New South Wales, who had held QLD at arm’s length from the top spot since Round 3..
QLD’s strong performance was helped by the efforts of Louise Witton (Coolum Beach) who was recognised for her input to the Maroons’ side in Bowls Australia’s skip’s ladder, where she finished second overall, taking six game points, just one point behind NSW’s Beth Quinlan.
The QLD men’s team was not as fortunate, finishing in fourth place, despite a solid performance winning four out of seven rounds including a game against the team everyone wants to beat NSW in a incredibly close 57-52 round.

The men’s side was Bob Dobinson, Geoff Hawken, Jack Horne, Neville Jenkins, Trevor Broadbent, Nigel Smith, Peter Johnson, Max Jaffray, Ed Boxall, Glen Bailey, Kerry Flint, Greg Ash.
