Pairs winners of Champion of Club Champions crowned today!
Congratulations to Club Helensvale men and Mt Gravatt women on their win of the Champion of Club Champions Pairs!
Men
The Club Helensvale combination of Andrew Howie & Nathan Rice surged to an impressive Gold medal victory in the Pairs final of the Bowls Queensland 2019 Champion of Club Champions played at the North Toowoomba Bowls Club today.
Howie & Rice didn’t have things all their own way, up against Hamilton’s John Newell & Jason Moore.
Howie & Rice took an early 9-5 lead but Howell & Moore fought back to level at 9 all and levelled again at 12 all before the Helensvale combination clicked to shoot to an 18-12 lead after 14 ends. It was then shot for shot, with Howell & Moore trying to narrow the lead but Howie & Rice held firm to close out the contest 24-14. The standard of bowls was first class as an enthralled crowd followed the action.
In the Bronze medal match, Marlin Coast Coast held off a fast finishing Gracemere to win 23-19.
Women
In a closely contested Women’s Gold medal match, Mt Gravatt’s Debbie Logan & Glenys Read held off a ‘never say die’ Elliott Heads team of Wendy Campbell & Lorelle Hofsteeter to win 20-14. Logan & Read led early & held their nerve. In the Bronze medal match, Bribie Island survived a huge comeback by Southern Suburbs Mackay to win 24-19 after Bribie led 20-6 after 12 ends.
Toowoomba Regional Council Deputy Mayor Carol Taylor presented the medals along with Bowls Queensland officials and were glowing in their comments on the superb job North Toowoomba Bowls Club were doing staging this years Champion of Club Championships. In particular, they praised NTBC green keeper Dave Howard for presenting outstanding playing surfaces for the championship.
The prestigious Champion of Club Champion Singles gets underway first thing tomorrow, with the finals to be played on Thursday.
