Men’s Super State Singles Champ
International raider, Scotland’s Kevin Anderson.
Scotland’s Kevin Anderson was crowned the 2019 Queensland Men’s State Singles Champion after an emphatic victory in today’s final against Club Pine Rivers’ Steven Tong.
Anderson, who has resided in Australia for over four years won his second Queensland State Title, a former triples winner from 2017.
Anderson’s championships were looking over half way through his semi-final with in-form Gold Coaster Scott DeJongh-Fitzpatrick; looking down the barrel at 4-18.
A brilliant come-back saw the Broadbeach Bull run over the top of DeJongh-Fitzpatrick, scoring two full counts to give himself a fighting chance and was playing better and better each end.
Anderson looked determined to get off to a better start in the final and before Tong had a chance to settle into the match, scores were already 20-9.
Steven Tong couldn’t believe his luck when Anderson game went off hist game just enough for Tong to score a further 10 shots and really start to look like a contender for the title.
At 19-24 Tong held a great four; however in true Anderson style he ran the jack in the ditch to win the game.
Having already established a promising career in Scotland having won a Scottish National Singles title, Anderson still rated this win as his best to date.
“Queensland is about 10 times the size of Scotland so I’m really stoked to have won this trophy today,” said the delighted winner.
Anderson will represent Queensland and his club Broadbeach at the National Championships at Merimbula in December.
Steven Tong was happy to have made his first State Singles final; he walks away from these championships a fours winner off the back of a memorable year, making his Queensland debut against New South Wales in February.
Another notable mention; the future is bright for Under-18 QLD representative Kane Nelson who was a semi-finalist, going down to Tong by 6 earlier in the day.
