State Women’s & Men’s Triples Champions Crowned
After two days of competitive play in trying showery conditions on the Gold Coast, the 2024 Queensland State Triples Champions have been decided with both teams taking out the event for the first time.
The women’s gold medal game was an arm wrestle with Brenda Balchin, Brenda Thompson and Noelene Dutton combining to defeat Yvonne Lovelock, Karen Goldsworthy and Bolivia Millerick 20-18. Leading 12-11, the Dutton trio then opened up a gap to lead 19-11, Millerick’s team staged a comeback to trail by three with two ends to play until Dutton’s rink steadied to claim the title. A first State Title for both Dutton and Balchin, a first Triples Title for Thompson.
In the Bronze Medal play off, the experienced Maree Gibbs, Adele Pershouse and Serena Matthews defeated Sheena Smyth, Vikki Grenot and Liz Walton 29-18.
In the men’s event, Kane Nelson racked up his second State Title in three days, teaming up with Andrew Evans and Jake Rynne to defeat Gary Pearson, Ian Law and Gary Law 28 – 21 in the final. Law’s rink held the lead for much of the game to be 15-14 before Nelson’s crew turned the tide to lead 22-15, they maintained the pressure to hold a handy buffer until the end. It was the first State Title for Evans and the first State Triples Title for Rynne and Nelson after multiple runners up in the event.
In the Bronze medal encounter, Kepler Wessels, Chris Le Lievre & Matthew Lucas overcame Bradley Lawson, Dean McWhinney & Dale McWhinney-Shillington 24-19.
