Juniors on the hop

There were plenty of good bowls wrecked by gusts of wind at Caloundra Bowls Club today.
The opening day of State Pairs saw three rounds played and three semi finals affected by increasingly bitter conditions.
Going into tomorrow’s U18 Gold Medal final is Jessie Cottell (Broadbeach) & Nick Cahill (Bargara) against Mitchell Weier (Hervey Bay) & Kain Wallis (Tin Can Bay).
In today’s semi final, Julia Allen-Best and Brittanny Wiley were smashed on the scorecard by Cottell and Cahill 23-7, yet Allen-Best played superb lead bowls and Wiley is a reliable skip.
It was hard to believe the Allen-Best & Wiley pairing could be beaten by such a margin given the standard of their play, but the winners were even better, Cottell and Cahill great friends “who have each other’s backs”, both on and off the green.
The U18 Bronze Medal playoff should also be a cracker of a game with Julia Allen-Best (Tin Can Bay) & Brittanny Wiley (Binjour) pitched against Rebecca Rixon (Kawana) & Shane White (Helensvale).
Rixon and White had a rough time of it in today’s semi, going down 14-12 to Weier and Wallis, both sides having great bowls lured off track by the blustery conditions.
Going for the U15 Pairs crown tomorrow, two boys from Dalby fighting it out, Jake Rynne (now playing for North Toowoomba) and Bradley Flegler (now playing for Enoggera).
Rynne is teamed up with good mate Kane Nelson (Belmont Services) performing the skip’s role and Flegler Flegler will look to the skipping skills of Shane Rideout (Gladstone) to tip the balance his way.
Rynne and Nelson played a semi final today against State Championships first timers, Gympie Year 6 students Travis Pearce and Hayden Oster, who performed creditably against an experienced opposition.
