Bowls is on the up!

After numerous successes on the world stage the Australian Institute of Sport has given bowls a higher priority in the strategic plan meaning more resources and funding can be provided to the sport. Due to Australia’s consistent bowls success on the international stage, the Australian Institute of Sport has decided to elevate bowls in their categorisation model of sport, from “National/and/or Iconic” to “Foundation” meaning the A.I.S will be able to provide more support to bowls.

Australia’s Winning Edge sport categorisation is a national framework to identify sports most likely to contribute to Australia’s high-level performance targets and establishes a ‘priority order’ of sports and guides system partners with delivering resources and funding to sports in support of these targets.

Sports identified as a“Foundation” sport have to show a strong record of achieving multi-medal
or consistent team medals at Olympic, Paralympic or Commonwealth Games and be considered highly likely that they will continue to achieve medal success at these
events.

The A.I.S says Australian representatives demonstrate a high probability of winning gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in the future after the success found at previous Commonwealth games and World Championships.

Bowls Australia CEO Neil Dalrymple says the consistency and quality shown by Australian representatives in international competition has helped to change the AIS’s categorisation of bowls.

“I am very pleased to report that Bowls has been elevated by the AIS in their categorisation model,” Dalrymple said.

“This is great recognition of our High-Performance program and our recent successes on the world bowls stage over the past couple of years but especially our fantastic results at the 2016 World Championship.

“Congratulations to the HP coaching team and athletes who have contributed to this result.”

The A.I.S Winning Edge strategy focuses on helping provide consistent success for Australian athletes and teams on the world stage, through improved governance structures and contemporary reporting and monitoring of performance to engage and inspire all Australians.
