The Australian Under 18 Championships (October 1-3) was a tough campaign for defending champions Queensland, however Jacob Nelson, Dale McWhinney-Shillington and Mitchell Mears performed well as a triples team to bring home gold.

The boys had been on a hot-streak in South Australia throughout the triples competition defeating every team in their section and continued their success with a big 19-6 win in the final against Tasmania.

QLD took on some of the best U18 players in Australia and still managed to produce results with the team bringing home a total of four medals out of the eight disciplines, with the girls 4th overall  and the boys 3rd despite the adverse weather conditions.

The girls fours picked up silver after a strong performance in their sectional play winning three out of three, but Julia Allen-Best, Rebecca Rixon, Shervawn Wilson, Jessica Srisamruaybai just lost out to a strong NSW side 19-7 in the final play off for gold.

QLD’s bronze medals were collected in the singles finals by Jacob Nelson after beating Tasmania 21-17 in the boys section and Jessie Cottell for the girls after winning 21-9 against WA .

The other members of this year’s U18 team were Jake Rynne (North Toowoomba), Jayden Christie (Club Helensvale).
