State Pennant Biff at Bribie

by admin on November 27, 2015

The top eight men’s and women’s Division One Pennant teams in Queensland go head to head this weekend at State Pennant 2016 at Bribie Island Bowls Club. It’s always a spectacular show, the best eight Division One sides in the state lined up to do battle at State Pennant each year.
They fly their colours and their club flags, old friendships are renewed and new ones made.
“We’ve saved the best to last!” Bowls Queensland chairman John Dawson said in his welcome speech, referring to State Pennant as the culmination of the year’s bowls competitions and representative sport.
Cnr Gary Parsons from Moreton Bay Regional Council officially opened State Pennant 2016.
“It’s marvellous to support this event, thank you for having me, good bowling to all,” Parson said.
“I’ll be back to experience some of the action, but right now, I’m off to take part in a triathlon!”

Going face to face in the first round of State Pennant 2016 are:

MEN:
Cutheringa (Townsville) V Gladstone
South Toowoomba V Souths Suburban (Mackay)
Coolum Beach V Ferny Grove
Broadbeach V Pine Rivers Memorial
WOMEN:
Townsville Suburban V Bramble Bay
Souths Suburban (Mackay) V Yeppoon
Ferny Grove V West Toowoomba
Broadbeach V Club Kawana
There are two sections, three rounds, 63 ends per clash (three rinks per club), 3 hrs 45mins to finish each round.
The four rinks at Bribie Island are in great condition, greenkeeper Brett Long says No 1 green is probably in the best shape for today’s play.
“No 2 just came back in, No 3 has dried out nicely and runs nicely, and No 4 was re-grassed a couple of years ago, it runs quite nicely too,” Long said.
With black clouds hovering, Long says it’s likely a lot of water will sit on the green in the first instance, since it has been dry for so long, but once the water trickles down, it will drain quickly.

Bribie Island Bowls Club general manager Kevin Bertwistle said Bribie has pulled out all the stops as host club, starting with some freshly baked scones with jam and cream for morning tea.
“Coffee shop opens at 9am, we’ll have some nice sandwiches and roast beef rolls for lunch, it’s exciting to show off our new-look club,” Bertwistle said.
