Collision course

City vs Country final could be on the cards at Tweed Brisbane side Ferny Grove and country club Bargara could be on a collision course at the women’s State Pennant Finals, with both sides undefeated heading into tomorrow’s final round.

While 2012 runners-up West Toowoomba started the day as firm favourites for the women’s title, their campaign was dealt a massive blow by Ferny Grove this afternoon.

With star skip Sue Bond leading from the front, the Brisbane side clocked up an 11 shot win over their Downs rivals.

Bond defeated Queensland rep Tracy Foster 19-14, while teammate Kerry Meehan also took a five-shot win, over West Toowoomba’s Imelda Brumpton, 23-18.

Rae Imberger made it a clean sweep for Ferny Grove with a tight 22-21 victory over Jo Worsley, to see the Grove girls finish day one undefeated on 4+35.

Bargara, meanwhile, finished up one better on 4+36, thanks to a 23-shot defeat of Marlin Coast.

The Bargara girls prevailed on all three rinks, with Judith Everett and Gail Crompton enjoying especially big wins.

Everett defeated Marlin Coast’s Shirley Sampson 21-12, while Crompton impressed against Evelyn Herwig, 28-17.

Jessie Cannon made it three from three with a 19-16 victory over Lee Mikic.

The loss will make it difficult, although not impossible, for Marlin Coast to reach tomorrow’s final, with the Tropical Far North side currently third in Section 2 on 2-20.

Hervey Bay, who beat the winless Algester in round two, are currently running second on 2+23.

The Bay side made short work of Algester at Tweed this afternoon, clocking up double digit wins on all three rinks for a 77-41 victory.

Unfortunately for Ester Regan, the North Mackay skip’s dream of claiming a third State Pennant title came crashing down this afternoon, with her side defeated by Bribie Island.

Regan, who won the title with Mackay Suburban in 2006 and 2009, was beaten by Bribie’s Noela Byrne, 22-17.

And her teammates followed suit, with Bev Benson and Bev Svenson suffering 30-13 and 22-15 defeats respectively.

Bribie are second on the ladder in Section 1 on 2+28, but they’ll need to bring their A-game tomorrow if they’re to beat Ferny Grove and reach the final.

Round 3 action kicks off at Tweed Heads Bowls Club at 8.30am (AEDT) tomorrow and will be followed by the final.

Round 2 Results:
West Toowoomba 53 def by Ferny Grove 64
